AndreasHykade-RUNT-1.jpgDrawing and Animated Film is the topic of this year’s exhibition of drawings which is organized by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka for the seventeenth time over the period of forty years. Guided by the initial idea of the search for original drawings (the first exhibition in 1968 was titled International Exhibition of Original Drawings) we have before us about a hundred and forty originals, drawings and sketches for cartoon films. There are works by fourteen authors on display, presenting a variety of drawing techniques, topics, and styles.

Each film made frame by frame (image by image) is the most popular definition of the animated film. It is necessary to make clear that the object of our research is not the entire field of animated film, but only one of its forms - the cartoon. Each cartoon is also an animated film, but not always vice versa. We can animate puppets, people and objects, while in cartoons drawings or paintings are animated.

MPavlatova-Havlaty-Carnival-of-Animals-3.jpgThe authors at this exhibition still apply the traditional hand drawing technique, either on paper like Cohl, or using the today unavoidable assistant – the computer. Their films selected for this exhibition belong to the kind of authorial films that can mostly be seen only at film festivals. They are also all part of recent production (the oldest one is 3 Misses by Paul Driessen from 1998), which was also the intention during the selection, so that they are a kind of overview of that which is done in the field of cartoon today and how it is done. The idea was to select quality authorial works that would show the art of drawing and film animation in a representative way.

Participants at the 17th International Exhibition of Drawings: Igor Ćorić, Paul Driessen, Thomas Hicks, Elizabeth Hobbs, Andreas Hykade, Igor Kovalyov, Simone Massi, Izibene Onederra, Priit Pärn, Michaela Pavlatova and Vratislav Hlavaty, Daniel Šuljić,  J.J. Villard, Atsushi Wada, Koji Yamamura.
