MMSU is announcing Call for proposals for the international interdisciplinary project about the traditions of underground economy (smuggling, contraband). The project Smuggling Anthologies / Antologie di contrabbando is conceived as a combination of exhibitions, symposiums and workshops (research) successively occurring on three (3) locations:
At the MMSU Rijeka, 2013, Croatia
At the Idrija Municipal Museum in Idrija, 2014, Slovenia
At the Trieste Contemporanea Gallery in Trieste in 2014, Italy
The Exhibition and symposium will be held in the period of Oct. 22 to Dec. 4, 2013 at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka.
We invite artists, historians, sociologists, citizens, theorists and experts to propose art-research projects in the field of visual, media arts and film, theory, history, cultural heritage, ethnography and sociology which will correspond to the topic of smuggling with a documentary-fictional and practical-theoretical approach. The project advocates interdisciplinary approach to the topic through the proposals which can be: artworks, lectures, theoretical texts, archive-documentary materials, with an accent on the interdisciplinary.
A Jury of Experts will choose the submitted work for one or all three events for the three institutions/towns (Rijeka, Idrija, Trieste).
All three events will have an interval of approximately 4 months, where each of the events will have a different concept depending on the activities of the institution and region.

Smuggling has always been one of the main methods of survival throughout the world, overcoming all administrative/political regimes. Those who smuggled have done so to survive, not to live in wealth or generate financial surplus.
Motivated by that fact, we are interested in the ways, places and periods of survival of smuggling as an illegal economy on the crossroads of culture, society and life situations.
The topic of smuggling is partly placed in the context of emerging administrative and political maps and the differentiation between EU and non-EU countries, covering the area of Istria, Slovenian coast and the Bay of Trieste, and moreover the fact that not so long ago there were smuggling activities in the area in relations to sea-continent, Yugoslavia-Italy, socialism-capitalism.
Smuggling can be found in Europe too, a networked and densely populated continent with intersected borders favourable for the smugglers. We rely on the interpretations of smuggling by the word of mouth. Instead of the official truth and facts, we can find smuggling within the stories told throughout the generations, hidden narratives; we can read it in the lost narratives, history facts and fictional stories. Because of that, the project recognises meta-historical materials as a part of a cultural heritage. We will evaluate relations between official and non-official, written and established versus fluid, emotional, memories as well as distortion of facts, an ability to use a lie for denying the truth. In the vast grey area of smuggling, we can find activities which are hidden from the eyes of average civilians: human and organ trafficking, drugs and archaeological treasures which do not support the idea of smuggling as a way of survival using legal means, enable people to recover whatever they lack, finding benefits within limitations and obstacles. Where smuggling implies creativity, the project takes a turn towards the criminal street, opening the way to modern art where it can through its vast perspective observe the interweaving of the past and the present, crime and law/justice, art and economy.

In the selection, the Jury of Experts will take into account the production possibilities, feasibility of the project as well as content and the quality which corresponds to the given topic.
Propositions for applicants:
1. Eligible applicants are those from the EU member states, Croatia and other EU countries which are not referred to as the Third Country
2. Applications can propose already existing, as well as new works, which will be supported with the amount of 1000 euro. Applications can be sent by post to the address: MMSU, Dolac 1/II, 51000 Rijeka, or by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org, with an indication 'Competition Smuggling Anthologies'. In the case of the collective application, the fee remains 1000 euro.
3. You can apply with at most two (2) pieces of artwork for the competition.
4. Submissions with incomplete documentation will not be taken in consideration.
5. Registration for the competition in the form of application can be obtained HERE
6. Materials provided with the application (CD, DVD, photographs) will not be returned to the applicant. Please, do not send the original artwork.
REGISTRATION needs to be comprised of:
1. Complete application form DOWNLOAD
2. Description which will allow the Jury of Experts the insight of the proposed artwork through the appropriate documentation (sketch, photo, video or etc.)
3. Specification of the execution (Set up and removal of the artwork, list of technical equipment needed)
4. Cost estimate for the implementation of the project (including the value of insurance, if necessary)
Note: Accepted works of art will be transported according to agreement. In case of necessity for the Author to be present for the installation or performance, travelling expenses, room and accommodation will be covered through the project. The Project will ensure that all the traveling cost is covered for the selected Authors and their appearance on the opening night of the exhibition (Rijeka-Idrija-Trieste).
